Senate President Godswill Akpabio has become a member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The last time a Nigerian was elected into that committee was in 1964.
Akpabio’s aide Anietie Ekong who confirmed the appointment in Abuja said the former Akwa-Ibom governor who was elected by the delegates will serve for three years.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union, located in Geneva, Switzerland, was established in 1889 and is dedicated to foster peace through parliamentary and dialogue.
With 179 member countries out of 193 worldwide, the IPU plays a pivotal role in facilitating parliamentary diplomacy and empowering parliaments.
The 147th IPU Assembly took place in Luanda, Angola, from October 21st to 27th, 2023, and was hosted by the National Assembly of Angola.
During this week-long assembly, delegates discussed critical global issues and explored actions to strengthen the trust between people and their governing structures.
The goal of the discussion was to improve government organizations so they work better, can be trusted, and represent people well in order to handle the many problems in the world, like politics, money, and the environment.
