China’s new high-speed maglev train rolled off the production line on Tuesday. It is designed to have a top speed of 600 kilometers per hour – currently the fastest ground vehicle available globally.
The new maglev transportation system made its public debut in the coastal city of Qingdao, east China’s Shandong Province.

It was developed by China, marking the country’s latest scientific and technological achievement in the field of rail transit, according to the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation.
The company said. The train is due to undergo several years of testing before it enters service, and high-speed maglev tracks will have to be laid.

However, when it begins commercial operations, the train is expected to significantly cut rail travel time. The time to travel between Beijing and Shanghai by high-speed train, at present, is about five hours, but it will be halved to just about two and a half hours.
The train uses electromagnets to suspend itself above the rails, and because there is no friction from contact with the rail lines, the train can run quietly and smoothly.
China has been using the technology for almost two decades on a very limited scale. Shanghai has a short maglev line running from one of its airports to town.
While there are no inter-city or inter-province maglev lines yet in China, some cities including Shanghai and Chengdu have already started to conduct research.

In addition to existing maglev lines in Beijing, Shanghai and Changsha, two short-distance low-speed maglev lines are being constructed in Qingyuan, Guangdong province, and Fenghuang county, Hunan province, China Daily reported.
