Senate Deputy Chief Whip bags African Youth Role Model Prize; Inducted into African Youth Hall of Fame

The Deputy Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate and Senator representing Niger North Senatorial District, Sen. Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, has won the coveted African Youth Role Model Prize.

The formal conferment of his award and investiture into the African Youth Hall of Fame took place at a colourful event organized by the African Youth Resource Centre, one of Africa’s foremost youth serving organizations, in commemoration of the 2022 International Youth Day, on Friday 12th August 2022 at the Zuma Hall, Rockview Royale Hotel, Abuja.

In his acceptance speech, Sen. Abdullahi said the youth remained the bedrock of nation building; hence deserving of all the attention and support needed to enable them assume their rightful place as future leaders. “This informed my personal drive to ensure the well-being and empowerment of the youth of my Senatorial District and Nigeria in general. I therefore dedicate this Prize to them.”

The Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Sunday Dare, who was represented at the event by Mrs. Lami Bature, an Assistant Director at the Ministry, observed that the International Youth Day affords Nigeria a unique opportunity to reflect on efforts and strategies towards securing the desired future for our great country through conscious and concerted efforts at developing the Youth Sector. He therefore called on all stakeholders to redouble commitment to youth development in Nigeria and Africa; while commending the AYRC for organizing the event and instituting the African Youth Role Model Prize, which he believes would go a long way in promoting positive youth role modeling and galvanizing further support for youth development.

In his address the Director General of the Centre, Mr. Ben Duntoye, a former President of the Pan African Youth Union (PYU), revealed that one of the major research findings of the Centre vis-à-vis the root causes of moral decadence in Africa was the near bankruptcy of positive role modeling and systemic mentorship mechanisms; hence, the resolve of AYRC to establish the African Youth Role Model Prize, to identify and honour outstanding leaders that have contributed significantly to youth empowerment and national development across the Continent, of which Sen. Abdullahi was one of the pioneer prize winners.

Others who bagged the coveted prize include Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, Commandant General of the NSCDC; Chief Edward David Onoja, Deputy Governor of Kogi State; Sen. Sadiq Suleiman Umar, Chairman Senate Committee on Rules and Business and Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.

The event was attended by youth representatives from the 36 states of the Federation and the FCT, government officials, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Captains of Industry and renowned Nollywood stars, amongst others.
