Enugu State LGA Election Turned Bloody, Five Feared Killed As Gunmen Attack Polling Units

Enugu State local government election turned bloody as gun men attacked most polling units in Enugu East Senatorial zone, report has it that from Amagu Obeagu in Enugu south LGA, Amodu town in Nkanu West down to Ogonogo Eji ward 3 Akpugo there was incident of gun men attack were scores of voters were killed including vehicles belonging to some motorists and politicians.

In Amagu Obeagu In Enugu south local government area of the state not fewer than two people were killed and two others burnt inside their cars. Equally in a polling unit in Amodu Awkunanaw three people were shot dead.

There was attack at ward 3 Akpugo collation center were not fewer than four vehicles were burnt by these rampaging gun men inside community primary school Ogonogo Eji Ndiuno Akpugo, car belonging to People’s Democratic party councilorship candidate Hon. Sunday Nnaji, Special assistance to Enugu State governor  Hon. Tochukwu ogbodo, Former Deputy chairman of PDP in ward 3 Akpugo Hon. Charles Nnamchi, former Commissioner for sports etc.

Attempt was made to burn down a federal lawmaker house before military and other security agencies engaged these gun men and at Ogbashi polling unit in the same ward 3 Akpugo in Nkanu West LGA of Enugu State a young man was shot in the face and in the arm.

Currently military have taken over oriemba market axis of Akpugo as normalcy is gradually returning.

It was gathered that the armed hoodlums after attacking voters also set ablaze some vehicles that were packed at the scene of the incident.

In a video sighted by salemgists, a voice was heard warning people to stay at home, citing violence as the reason. An eyewitness at the scene identified as Frank Nnaji said:

“I am lucky to be alive, they came where we are doing Chairmanship election and shouted no election and started shooting, many casualties, I was nearly hit. RIP to the dead.”

One of the vehicles razed by gunmen in Enugu on Wednesday

The incident happened during the elections for the office of the 17 council chairmen and 260 councillorship wards conducted by the state’s Independent Electoral Commission on Wednesday.

Although, the election which was marred by apathy, was largely peaceful except in Aninri, Awgu, Nkanu West and Enugu South where hoodlums reportedly rained terror.

Sources told Hotmedia.ng that the gunmen invaded the polling units at Obeagu ward III in Enugu South Local Government Area and another polling unit at Akpugo in Nkanu West LGA, and disrupted the exercise.

One of the sources said the hoodlums destroyed electoral materials after chasing away voters.

According to the source who simply gave his name as Cyprian Nwobodo, about five persons were shot and killed while some people escaped with matchet cuts and bullet wounds. They also burnt two vehicles belonging to community members who came to exercise their suffrage, the source added.

“I overheard the gunmen shouting from my hiding that they had warned that there should no longer be elections in any part of the South East,” the source recounted.
