Sit-At-Home: Governor Lost Control, Markets, Banks Adamant As Businesses Remain Shut In Onitsha

The residents of the commercial City of Onitsha metropolis and environs have once again continued to remain indoors on Mondays despite Governor Willie Obiano’s directives to markets, banks and other business owners to go about their Monday normal businesses.

Hotmedia.ng Correspondent who went around the city and interacted with some people on the issue gathered that fears of the unknown still grips the residents.

Some people who spoke to our correspondent, Ifejioforeme Agwaniru, Okeke Mmekowulu and Ifedi Izuorah said that
with the development and attitude of staying at home on Mondays in the entire South East Region of the country, it seems that the various Governors in the South East have totally lost control of the region.

According to them, from all indications the Governors of the region also seem to be bereft of ideas on what approach to be used to tackle the dwindling security situation in the region as well as end the IPOB perennial sit-at-home order in the region.

However, the sit-at-home order which is almost becoming a tradition in the South East States seems to have no reasonable effect, except on the common man whose sources of livelihood are continually disrupted by the exercise, they said.

“The Governors also seem not perturbed by the current Monday status in the region, after all, they have never shown enough interest on matters that affect the generality of the people.”

“As long as the current sit-at-home does not affect the distribution of the monthly Federal Government revenue allocation accruing to various States in the region, the State Governors are not worried by the current situation in their States”.

However, if the sit-at-home was taking place in Abuja, Lagos or Port-Harcourt the impact will be much felt across the country and internationally, they pointed.

“Subjecting the impoverished and struggling people of the South East Region who are already suffocating in deprivation is not welcomed. All well-meaning people should, including the Governors, display leadership and do all within their powers to engage in discussions with the aggrieved section of IPOB who have continued to hold the people hostage on Mondays in their various homes.

The non-chalant attitude of the Governors in this zone is not helping matter as it is the citizens and to a large extent the lowly placed that bear the final brunt.”

They emphasized that with the continued sit-at-home being observed in the South East every Monday against the majority wish of the people because of their livelihood, it means that the legitimacy of the Governors are now threatened and the fear of the unknown and
creating a State of Emergency in such States if the situation degenerates.

“However, it seems that in the entire South East Region today one only has four workdays instead of five.ln some cases, even three.
