Thousands upon thousands of elated Guineans take to the streets across Guinea to celebrate Sunday’s downfall of a Leader they describe as a tyrant.
The Coup leader Lieutenant-Colonel Mamady Doumbouya took President Alpha Conde into custody on Sunday in what marked the end of an era as curtains fell on Condé’s regime.
Today the leaders of the coup will meet with Guinea’s ousted
ousted cabinet to discuss a transition of power. The meeting was called by the coup leader, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, who has since then replaced regional governors with military commanders.
It will be interesting to see how this meeting will unfold.
The 83-year-old President Condé had resisted pressure to resign and waged a coup against the people by changing the constitution to allow him to run for a controversial third term.
Experts say that the turn of events could have been influenced by Presidents proposal to cut military salaries.
The Head of Special Forces Col. Mamady Doumbouya, said “poverty and endemic corruption” had driven his forces to remove Conde from office.
“We have dissolved government and institutions,” Doumbouya said on state television, draped in Guinea’s national flag and surrounded by eight other armed soldiers.
“We are going to rewrite a constitution together.” reiterated further.
