APGA Primaries: When The Guilty Are Afraid – Joe C. Anatune

Fact is that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has done very well in the 16 years it has been controlling the machinery of governance in Anambra State. It is now the sought-after political party or if you like, the preferred political party brand by the critical mass of Anambra people. The achievements of the party in the state have become a reference point for those who desire to govern other states in Nigeria.

This will be further heightened by the time the full benefits of the silent revolution of Governor Obiano’s legacy projects are fully unveiled and appreciated by the people. Arising from this, Anambra will obviously be the beautiful bride to local and international investors and also a tourist destination.

Against the above backdrop, it is therefore not surprising that the battle for who will succeed Governor Obiano will attract a phenomenal level of intra and inter party attention, struggle and acrimonies.

What is disheartening however, is that some of the gladiators are not playing by the rules. They erroneously believe that Anambra is for sale and that everyone has a price. And when the people are not responding, they resort to throwing mud at those they perceive to be standing in their way. They smear the party or aspirants who have worked hard to endear themselves to the people. In fact, they throw all the rules of engagement to the dogs because they are afraid of their shadows, as aptly captured by the Igbo adage that he who kills by the sword is afraid of the sword.

In all these, they forget that you can’t buy love. You work for it, you earn it like Prof. Chukwuma Soludo who the people of Anambra have demanded to join the race for the November 6, 2021 governorship election and who has accepted to run.

Notwithstanding, Soludo has been traversing all nooks and corners of the state, consulting all segments of the demographics and the party structure in preparation for the party primaries and the main election.

The 24 support groups that clamoured for his current involvement as an aspirant in the forthcoming election are not resting on their oars. On Saturday, March 20, 2021, they stormed Awka for a praise and worship event where they resolved to knock on doors, spread the good news from Soludo and win hearts. They already collectively have over one million members in their self- funded membership drive.

This is phenomenal, and a rare demonstration of belief and affection for a man whose records speak for him and whose ideas are both fundamental and disruptive.

Now, for those who think, that money can solve all problems and are haunted by the old ways they had gleefully used in climbing to political power, it is unfortunately too late in the day as Anambra has moved on to a new level in the recruitment of political leadership.

Yes, Anambra is on the march for a thinker and a doer who has Solutions for its socio-economic challenges and who believes and is guided by the democratic ethos. They have resolved not to be taken back to Egypt again, irrespective of the antics of the few, who refuse to be weaned off the heritage of the past.
